What is the Weather like?

June-July-August, expect temperatures ranging from 40°F to 75°F.
May and September, expect temperatures ranging from 30°F to 65°F.

Often when it rains in Alaska, it is cool. For any trip to Alaska, you should be prepared for rain. That is not to say that it always rains. However, you should always be prepared.

Weather in Alaska is subject to extremely rapid changes. I have personally witnessed a change from beautiful blue skies with no wind to gail force winds and pouring rain in virtually a matter of minutes. Also, Alaska's topography and climate create what are called: microclimates. Therefore, it is impossible to predict the weather from one town to the next.

Basically, it is highly recommended to be prepared for any kind of weather at all times.

What Clothing should we bring?

For any summer trip to Alaska, it is essential that you be prepared for any kind of weather. For that reason, layered clothing is the best approach. This allows you to take off or add clothing according to the temperature.

A good set of raingear is a must! Hopefully, you will not need to use it.

Don't hesitate to bring a pair of gloves and hat even in summer. Warm shoes, at least a pair of sneakers, is also a good idea. It is even better if they are waterproof. For windy days, a scarf is not a bad idea.

Do not be fooled by a beautiful sunny day when you go out fishing on the river. Our rivers are cold (mostly glacial fed). Most boats have aluminum hulls and therefore radiate the cold from the river to your feet and your body. Therefore, it can be cold on the river even on a beautiful warm sunny day (especially if the wind is blowing).

What are the Bugs like?

Depending upon where you are on the Kenai Peninsula there are bugs from late May on to beginning of September. Around our Lodge there are usually not many and people enjoy sitting outside.

On the river or ocean you should not have a problem since there is always a breeze and the bugs don’t like moving waters. Some guides will tell you to never use bug spray on a fishing trip. Fish don’t bite as well.

To carry bug repellent is always a good idea specially if you are planning to do some hiking. You can bring your own or by some in Soldotna just a few minutes from the Lodge. Mosquitoes are worst in May and June. Black flies and white-socks are worst in August and September.

You provide breakfast, what do we do about Lunch and Dinner?

There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance or a short driving distance from our Lodge. The Safeway grocery store is 5 minutes by car from our Lodge. There is an excellent sandwich shop in town called "Jersey Subs". For bigger groups (10 people or more) we can offer catered dinner or lunch at our Lodge. For all your trips we can provide a bag lunch for an additional cost.

Guests are always welcome to use our outside grill prepare lunch or dinner. There is also a common microwave and common refrigerator for guest use.

What happens to my fish after I catch it on a charter?

Filleting/vacuum packing/freezing of your catch is included with all freshwater charters.

Filleting/freezing of your catch is included with saltwater charters. Unless otherwise stated, vacuum packing of your fish from saltwater charters is not included in the price of the charter. Vacuum packing of your catch from saltwater charters is available on site for an extra fee ($0.85 to $1 per pound of fillets).

How do I get my fish home?

Prior to taking your fish home, it should always be vacuum packed and at least partially frozen. Soldotna B&B Lodge and K-Bay Fishing Charters supply what are called "fish boxes" for shipping or carrying fish. These "fish boxes" are essentially Styrofoam coolers inside of a cardboard box. Unless otherwise stated, "fish boxes" are NOT included with most fishing Charter reservations or package reservations.

Most commercial airlines permit two 50 pound pieces of luggage per passenger. In lieu of luggage, you may check-in "fish boxes" as luggage. If they exceed 50 pounds you will likely have to pay extra. Also, you may pay extra to check-in additional boxes.

For many, they prefer the convenience of door-to-door shipping. In this case, we offer complete FedEx overnight shipping services directly from our Lodge. Also, our experience is that people often have insufficient space in their vehicles to carry all of their "fish boxes" to the airport. Again, FedEx overnight offers a good alternative. Typical FedEx charges are between $2-$5 per pound depending on how much is being shipped. The more pounds are being shipped, the less it costs per pound.

Can we fish from your private river bank?

To fish from our private bank you may either bring your own equipment or you can purchase rods and tackle from us. From May – October you can fish for Trout and Dolly Varden. In July to mid August we can offer great Red Salmon fishing.

When is the best time to come?

Well that all depends what you are planning to do on the Kenai Peninsula.

Always keep in mind when you go fishing that Fishing is called fishing - not catching - and of course it is always hard to predict nature. Every day is different and nobody can do anything about the weather. With that in the back of your mind we can give you the following guidelines.

Ocean fishing:
Halibut: year-round, best May-September fishing for Halibut out of Homer. The Limit is 2 Halibut per person per day.
Lingcod: Great to catch in July-September, limit is two lingcod per person per day
King Salmon: year-round, best May-June, limit is two per person per day
Silver Salmon: July-August, limit is three per person per day

River Fishing on the Kenai or Kasilof river:

King Salmon: There are 2 runs of Kings. From mid May thru mid August the Kings are in the rivers. You are allowed to catch them from May to the last day in July. The limit is 1 per person per day.

Red Salmon: There are 2 runs of Reds from around mid June to mid August. The limit is 3 per person per day. Over the last 3 years, in midseason Fish and Game has increased the limit to 6 per person per day.

Silver Salmon: Silvers are great to catch from August to October. Their limit is 2 per person per day.

Trophy Rainbow Trout / Dolly Varden:
Great to catch from May thru October. You can keep them from mid June to the end of September with a limit of one Trout per person per day and 1 Dolly per person per day.
It is encouraged to release the Trout and Dolly Varden to protect the stock.

Who needs Fishing Licenses and where do we get them?

All residents and nonresidents 16 and older require fishing licenses. Anyone fishing for King Salmon must have a separate "King Stamp". Anglers under 16 years of age do not require fishing licenses or King Stamps but must carry with them a "harvest card". Fishing licenses, King Stamps, and harvest cards are available at both Soldotna B&B Lodge and K-Bay fishing charters.

Fishing licenses and King Stamps are available in durations of 1 day, 3 day, 7 day, 14 day, and annual.

How do we get to your Lodge?

Most people fly into Anchorage, rent a car, and then drive to Soldotna B&B Lodge (see below). However, you may also fly from Anchorage Airport to Kenai Airport (around a 15-20 minute flight which costs around $150-$175 per person). Then, you may either rent a car at the Kenai Airport or take a cab to Soldotna B&B Lodge. It is only about a 15 minute drive from the Kenai Airport to Soldotna B&B Lodge.

How far of a drive is it from Anchorage to Soldotna B&B Lodge?

Weather depending, it is a 2 hour 15 minute to 3 hour drive from Anchorage to Soldotna B&B Lodge. It is a relatively easy drive on a well-maintained federal highway. There are some mountainous, curvy sections; however, the driving is not that difficult. It is an absolutely beautiful drive and if you have additional time, there are numerous places to stop along the way for sightseeing and photo taking.

Do we have to have a rental car?

Although it is not an absolute requirement, we typically highly recommend that you have a rental car. It greatly increases your flexibility and your opportunities to go out and explore the spectacular Kenai Peninsula. Keep in mind in the summer time we have a lot of daylight.

Taxis are always certainly an option but are normally more expensive than a rental car if you want to go to various places. There is also a private shuttle bus available in the local area but it has a very limited schedule.

If you have special needs, we can always try to work with you to arrange alternatives to a rental car. For example, in July, depending upon what kind of fishing or other activities you would like to do, it is sometimes not necessary to have a rental car.

How many people/anglers are there on a boat, how big a boat?

On the Kasilof river, there are a maximum of five anglers and a guide on a boat. On the Kasilof river, only drift boats (boats without motors) are permitted. These boats are between 17 to 21 feet long. However, we typically put no more than four anglers on a boat unless there is a group of five which specifically asks to be on a boat together.

On the Kenai River, July, there are a maximum of four anglers and a guide on a boat. Any other month, there are a maximum of five anglers and a guide on a boat. However, we typically put no more than four anglers on a boat unless there is a group of five which specifically asks to be on a boat together. On the Kenai River, both drift boats and powerboats are used. However, there are sections of the river (upper Kenai River) where only drift boats are permitted. Powerboats are 20-22 feet long. Again, drift-boats are 17-21 feet long.

For halibut charters, most of our guests prefer a 6 pack with 6 anglers on the boat. Six-pack boats are typically between 30-36 feet long. Bigger boats with up to 15 anglers on the boat are also available and range up to over 50 feet long.

How many rooms does your Lodge have?

Our Lodge has a total of 16 rooms. For larger groups, additional rooms are available at nearby lodges.

How many people can your Lodge accommodate?

With a total of 16 rooms, Soldotna B&B Lodge can accommodate approximately a maximum of 40 people. For larger groups, additional guests may be housed at nearby lodges.

Is your Lodge handicap accessible?

There is a wheelchair entry. There is one shower which has a built in seat which allows a handicap person to take a shower by themselves. However, the shower it self is not wheelchair accessible (the person must be assisted into the shower seat). Also, the toilet also does not have wall handles. We have had handicapped/wheelchair-bound guests at our Lodge before. It has never been a problem.

Are there phones in the rooms?

Yes. You can receive (not directly) and make calls from your guest room. In addition to a telephone, there is a radio alarm clock and a television with 40 Channel cable TV.

When is breakfast served?

Full-breakfast is served from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.. Continental breakfast is available year-round and is available until 10 a.m..

How much day light is there?

This depends substantially upon when you would like to be in Alaska. May through September you can expect 12-20 hours of day light. June and July have the most day light.

Customer Testimonials
"I just wanted to take a minute to thank you and Steve for a fabulous week in the Kenai Peninsula. Your B&B is charming and comfortable, the fishing trips you helped put together exceeded our wildest dreams. Mindi and I felt like we were on the edge of a postcard the entire time. I am sending a photo from her trip. The smile on Mindi's face tells it all. Thanks again!
Phil Johnson and Mindi Nord

"We all had such a pleasant and exciting stay with over 20 silvers, and
a half-dozen kings, beautiful rainbows, fighting dollies, and wonderful wildlife! Steve and Monika provided the ambiance (and fileting) that made everyone at home. The rest of the staff as well as your fun and professional guides (Fred, John/Jughead, Mark, and Joe) added so much to the Alaska experience - WE WILL BE BACK!! "
Craig, Rich, Steve, Bob

"Steve and Monika: Allen and I wanted to thank you so much for the all too brief stay with you. Joe (one of our guides) was fantastic: fun to be with, informative and best of all helped us catch two King's, a couple Jack's (small kings), plus some miscellaneous dolly Varden and rainbow trout. It was a thrill! Lovely place, much too brief a visit, so tell your dad I
will fish with him next time. We hope to send friends your way. Thanks for your terrific hospitality!" Anonymous
